A Wolverhampton dad’s heartfelt story of resilience, hope, and transformation shines in a new book called “Don’t Follow The Crowd” inspired by his eldest daughter’s journey from isolation to self-discovery.
The story’s character “Ella” is based on his daughter Chloe, one of our Seniors, who faced relentless bullying throughout her school years, eventually being withdrawn for homeschooling. Lonely but determined, Chloe joined The Way Youth Zone.
Through our Youth Zone’s huge variety of youth-led activities – including music room, climbing wall, sports hall, gym, art room and dance studio – the support of dedicated youth workers, and the friendships she forged, Chloe began to rediscover her confidence and sense of self. Today, she stands as a part of her own rock band, Dying Addiction, where she leads on guitar, adds vocals, and writes the band’s original songs.
Chloe’s Dad, Anthony, explained, “I’m just a normal working-class bloke. I never imagined I’d publish a book, but seeing my daughter’s story unfold was incredible. If her journey can help others, then I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.”
“Chloe completely turned her life around,” her father shares proudly. “It all started with daring to dream and finding a community that empowered her to do just that at The Way. The youth workers are so supportive and encouraged Chloe to get involved.”
This week marks Youth Work Week 2024 which is an annual celebration of all things youth work. This year’s theme is “A right to youth work for all – delivering positive futures for young people.” Chloe’s story is a perfect example of the power of youth work for our young people.
